Our team consists of three dentists; Jean-Pierre Devenish, Aileen Lucas and Amanda Lau; who are all members of the Australian Dental Association; (ADA) and our dental therapist Susan Wood who is a member of the Australian Dental and Oral Health Therapists' Association (ADOHTA). Between these five clinicians they have over one hundred years’ experience in the dental profession. They are all passionate about their work and on-going professional development.
In addition our friendly Support Team is here to assist you. Each and every one of them is important to us and plays a central role in providing quality dental and oral health care.
JP (as Jean-Pierre is known) and his family moved to Albany from South Africa in 2010. After qualifying from the University of Pretoria with Honours in 2001, JP completed a year of compulsory community service in a small African town where he enjoyed seeing elephants roaming the streets, and would fall asleep to the sound of lions roaring in the evenings. A little different to Albany - but Albany is now firmly home for JP, his wife and their three children - where they feel they have found paradise!
Before moving to Albany, JP ran his own Practice for seven years and now works alongside Barry as the new owner of our Practice. Barry is very pleased to welcome and be working with JP to ensure the on-going care of all our patients.
As a general dentist, JP enjoys all aspects of dentistry as well as having a particular interest in conventional Orthodontics and clear invisible aligners to straighten teeth. In 2015, he received a fellowship, FICCDE in Orthodontics from the International College for Continuing Dental Education. JP takes great satisfaction in witnessing a patients’ increased confidence due to their ‘new’ smile and believes everyone deserves a beautiful smile. He also has a keen interest in composite (white) fillings and enjoys providing full composite rehabilitations where appropriate. JP strongly considers patients should feel in total control in the dental chair and his focus is to make every visit as painless and pleasant as possible for each and every patient.
In his spare time JP enjoys painting, visiting the gym, gardening and taking walks along the boardwalk and beach with his family.
Born in Scotland, Aileen qualified from Dundee University in 1982 and worked in private practice in England before immigrating to Australia in 1995. In addition to her initial qualification, Aileen gained a Graduate Certificate in Dentistry from the University of Adelaide in 2001. In 2003 she joined Barry J Geldard Dental Practice, after working in private practice in Albany and the public sector in Grafton NSW.
Aileen is a keen sailor and a long time member of Princess Royal Sailing Club Albany. Those who visit Aileen will know that there is always a lot of laughter coming from her surgery.
Amanda graduated from the University of Western Australia with Honours in 2009. She also completed an additional research Honours degree, focusing on composite restorations (white fillings). Whilst at university, Amanda undertook several placements in rural and remote locations around WA and Darwin, and knew she wanted to work in the country. She moved to Albany in early 2010 to work at Barry J Geldard & Associates Dental Practice. She thoroughly enjoys the lifestyle, especially the opportunities to go fishing, hiking and camping.Outside of work, Amanda is the lead cellist in the Albany Sinfonia Orchestra. She also plays soccer for Polonia FC, and umpires and plays basketball.
Amanda enjoys all aspects of dentistry. She is particularly enthusiastic about preventive care, and is keen to assist you in attaining and maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Amanda regularly attends professional development courses to ensure that her knowledge and practices are consistent with the highest of standards. Recently she travelled to Vietnam as a volunteer to provide dental treatment at orphanages with the Christian Health Aid Team.
Susan joined our team in 2014 as our Dental Therapist. Graduating from Curtin University in 1989, and with over 20 years’ experience in private practice in Perth, Susan enjoys working with patients of all ages. A strong believer in preventive care, Susan has also volunteered her time to provide dental care and treatment, including to Tibetan refugees in The Indian Himalayas as a team member with the Tibetan Dental Project.
Susan now lives in Torbay (to escape the Perth heat!) with her husband (and 2 dogs), and is enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle. Besides dentistry, Susan enjoys travelling; cycling; horse-riding; swimming and generally keeping fit. As a keen gardener, she has been very busy and is well on the way to establishing a new garden at their Torbay home.
We now have 3 ‘Susan’s in our team! Appointments are available with Susan, our Therapist, every Wednesday.
